Verification levels – what would you feel comfortable with?

We’re actively thinking about verification levels and would really like community input.

Some people value full anonymity. Others feel discussions work better when there’s some level of real-world accountability. We’re trying to find a balance where conversations stay useful and interesting without sliding into Reddit-level toxicity.

A few ideas we’re exploring:

Allowing anonymous posting, but with the ability to trace the account if something illegal is posted
(not claiming 100% anonymity — that’s rarely honest — but enough privacy to ask sensitive questions or share concerns without fear).

Letting users filter what they see based on verification level
(e.g. only show posts/comments from users with a verified phone number, or higher verification tiers).

Multiple verification levels instead of a single “verified / not verified” switch.

The goal isn’t control for its own sake — it’s to make the forum feel safe, usable, and worth participating in.

What level of verification would you personally be comfortable with?
And how important is anonymity to you, depending on topic or context?

Speaking for myself - i'm more comfortable with actual persons, sort of linkedin, but without the self promotion. I don't feel unsafe or uncomfortable posting av myself, but i'll guess in some situations that it can be limiting.

What a great question. I really appreciate that Reddit allows anonymity. It's allowed me to express things I wouldn't have otherwise. Not in a bad way, but in an honest way, primarily about my health. That said, I really like your suggestion of filtering by anonymous vs verified users. It might temper my reactions to those who are anonymous, as I know some that are anonymous use their anonymity to hide behind deplorable actions.

Great answer - when you say "express things I wouldn't have otherwise" can you please elaborate what this would be in more detail?

i guess what i'm aiming at that "anonymity" can be broad in the sense that it can be
everything from embarrasing to flat out deadly if a person behind that anonymity is doxed.

Say you are a user from North Korea - a data breach could potentially be deadly.
If someone's kink is exposed it can definatley be embarssing, but not deadly...

Thank you for asking... And very good points. When I say express things I wouldn't otherwise, I just mean that I'm a pretty private person. If I have a medical issue that I want to discuss with a community, I'll discuss it on Reddit anonymously, knowing that no one in the community will know who I am. I have freedom in that. If I were not anonymous, I would not reach out to the community in this way on such a topic.

So when I read the suggestion of signifying who is anonymous and who isn't -- and perhaps being able to filter content by those parameters -- I thought it is perhaps a good suggestion. It allows users to be anonymous or not, and it allows readers to choose who they want to hear from.

I think (hope?) most want a respectful, open community, and one where hopefully someone from North Korea or anywhere else is free to express themselves in whatever way they are comfortable. There's always risk of doxing, of course. When I signed up for Kamunity this morning, I had to enter an email address, so whether I'm anonymous or not, I could be exposed if someone links my user ID with my email address and whatever else they can learn about me.

I prefer anonymity. Every single account is now tied to our emails, telephone numbers, banks or even IDs. I rather stay anonymous, but obviously respectful and polite.

We are exploring a dual posting model that allows users to publish content as “anonymous.”

The challenge is trust and safety. If a platform stores any technical or legal linkage between an anonymous post and a real account, a data breach could expose individuals and put them at risk.

One approach we are considering is to deliberately sever that link entirely — meaning that even we, as the platform operator, cannot determine who authored a specific anonymous post. Not by choice. Not by court order. Not at all.

This shifts responsibility. If anonymity is absolute, then the platform must assume legal and ethical responsibility for the content itself. To prevent this from devolving into the kind of toxic environment seen elsewhere, the platform must actively moderate, curate, and stand behind what is published — rather than hiding behind user anonymity.
